Hilton Lac-Leamy & Casino du Lac-Leamy: our review
Updated · facts checked
Two lakes, a five-star Hilton and a Loto-Québec casino, ten minutes by car from downtown Ottawa. Pools heated indoors and out all year, a 17-room Amerispa, an 1,100-seat theatre and 1,400-plus slots make this Canada's most complete spa-plus-casino getaway.
Ideal for: Spa-first weekends with a little roulette, or an Ottawa sightseeing trip based on the Gatineau side.
Think twice if: Anyone in your party is under 18 — the casino, theatre and bars are all 18+.
The short version
The casino opened in 1996; five years later a Hilton hotel, a theatre and a conference centre joined it, creating the Gatineau complex known as the Hôtel-Casino du Lac-Leamy. It has carried five stars from Québec's CITQ since 2001 and CAA/AAA's Four Diamond award since 2002. The casino is a Loto-Québec operation; the hotel flies the Hilton flag.
Which room to book
How many rooms? Tourisme Outaouais says 349; Bonjour Québec gives 312 plus 37 suites. A Classic room means two queen beds, a Deluxe one king bed with a vanity by the entrance. Executive guests get the top three floors, served by their own elevator and staff. Suite types are One-bedroom, Murphy and Junior. All rooms come with a safe, a small fridge, a 47-inch TV, Crabtree & Evelyn bath products, and robes with slippers, and the hotel says they look over the two lakes — Lac de la Carrière and Lac Leamy.
Check-in 4 pm, check-out 11 am. In-room dining is available every day from 6:30 am until 10:30 pm.
Downtime: the best on our list
Here's why spa lovers book Lac-Leamy: indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs, all heated, open twelve months a year. Amerispa runs 17 treatment rooms; a two-hour Serenity package costs $252 from Monday to Thursday or $308 over Friday–Sunday, and booking a treatment gets you into the sauna, steam bath, whirlpools and pools. The 24/7 gym is free.
At the tables
Expect 48 tables, more than 1,400 slots, electronic terminals, a poker lounge and Mise-o-jeu sports betting. Monday to Thursday it's open 9 am to 5 am; Friday through Sunday it runs 24 hours. Québec's minimum age is 18, and if you look under 25 you may be asked for government photo ID.
Showtime
Nightlife comes in four flavours. The Théâtre du Casino (1,100 seats theatre-style, 770 cabaret-style; 18+ except special events) hosts the shows. Bar 7 does live bands and DJs from 7 pm every Friday and Saturday, plus Latin Thursdays. Bacchus is for a quiet scotch by the fire, with a cigar room. And Aléa, the nightclub, runs 11 pm–3 am and enforces a dress code.
Eating in
Book Arôme for the lake view: seafood and grill over Lac de la Carrière, a three-course Experience menu, and Sunday brunch. For smaller bills, Banco Bistro does steak, pizza and rotisserie; L'Instant has Montréal smoked meat, pasta and a smoked-meat poutine. The poolside snack bar, TGV, won't reopen until next summer.
Getting in and parking
Distances from the hotel: ByWard Market 4.1 km, Parliament 6.4 km, the Rideau Canal skateway 7.3 km — about ten minutes' drive to downtown Ottawa, and around 25 to the airport. On public transit, take the STO Rapibus to its Lac-Leamy station. Parking outside costs nothing, the valet service is on hold until further notice, and there are EV chargers. Pets weighing up to 34 kg are welcome for a $50 fee.
The getaway verdict
Canada's most restful casino hotel, and the handiest for seeing Ottawa. Go midweek for the spa (the weekend price jump is real) and save the tables for Friday night, when the casino stays open until morning.
