Grey Eagle Resort & Casino: our review
Updated · facts checked
Owned and run by the Tsuut'ina Nation on Calgary's south-west edge, Grey Eagle added its 178-room hotel in 2014. Book a west-facing room for the Rockies, a show at the 2,500-seat Event Centre and dinner at Little Chief, one of the better casino restaurants in the West — just note the pool is shut through a renovation running into 2027.
Ideal for: A Calgary concert night, or a base for Banff and Kananaskis day trips.
Think twice if: A pool is non-negotiable — it's closed for renovations.
The short version
No other casino hotel we review puts you this close to both a downtown and the mountains: central Calgary is minutes away, Kananaskis Country about 30 minutes. Grey Eagle is owned and run by the Tsuut'ina Nation; the casino came first, in 2007, and the six-storey, 178-room hotel celebrated its grand opening on May 2, 2014.
Which room to book
Ask for a west-facing room: on a clear day, the resort says, the Rockies line the horizon (the rest look over the city). Room types are Standard King, Premier King and Standard Two Queen — the one the hotel recommends for families — plus a King Suite and a Presidential Suite, all described by the hotel as newly renovated.
At the tables
The 84,000 sq ft floor has 975-plus slots (running 24 hours) and 32 tables (10 am–3 am), with high-limit rooms for baccarat, blackjack and more. Minimum age: 18. Works will continue in phases through 2026–2027, the casino says. Points go on Winner's Edge, the loyalty card used across Alberta.
Showtime
In 2024 the Event Centre — 2,500 seats, open to all ages — switched to L-Acoustics sound and picked up the Venue/Presenter of the Year prize at that year's YYC Music Awards. If you're going to a show, look at the Concert Night Getaway: an overnight room plus a pair of tickets, priced from $329 to $369.
Eating in
The standout is Little Chief, where Indigenous traditions meet a contemporary kitchen; both Avenue Magazine and the Calgary Herald have featured it. The 18+ Buffet keeps its nightly features going to the end of 2026 (December 31), then shuts in January 2027 while it is renovated. Elsewhere you can eat at Blaze Bar & Grill, drink at the Eagle Bar beside the slots, catch free weekend acts at the Stage Bar, or grab bannock and chili, Indian tacos or Saskatoon berry dumplings from the Eagle Street Eats truck.
Downtime
No swimming on site for now: the pool is closed during the casino renovation. The workaround is free entry for hotel guests at two City of Calgary pools, Glenmore and Killarney. Still open here: the 24-hour gym, the sauna and the outdoor hot tub.
Getting in, and getting out
To learn about the Nation itself, book a Grey Eagle Cultural Tour — options include a Buffalo Paddock Tour and a visit to the Tsuut'ina Museum. The drive from Calgary International Airport takes 30–45 minutes, and Banff is about an hour away. Parking is free, and pet owners are put on a floor set aside for them.
The getaway verdict
For a Calgary or Rockies getaway, this is the casino hotel to book, and it's a strong concert base too. Pack for the hot tub, not the pool, until the work is finished.
Good to know before you book
Is Grey Eagle's pool open?
Not during the casino renovation. Hotel guests can swim for free at the city's Glenmore and Killarney pools instead.
Which Grey Eagle rooms see the Rockies?
West-facing ones — the resort says they look toward the mountains on clear days.
Can kids go to concerts at Grey Eagle?
Yes. The Event Centre is all ages; only the casino requires guests to be 18+.
