A practical Winnipeg stay rather than a glamorous one: this Canad Inns hotel joins Manitoba's Club Regent Casino, with 146 smoke-free rooms, about 1,200 slots plus bingo next door, and a 1,300-seat event centre.

The short version

Officially it's the Canad Inns Destination Centre Club Regent Casino Hotel: six storeys, 146 rooms, all smoke-free, next door to Club Regent Casino — one of the two Casinos of Winnipeg operated by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries. A AAA inspector called the rooms "modest", and we wouldn't argue. You can book Two Queen, One Queen, One King or a One-Bedroom King Suite.

At the tables, and on stage

The casino has roughly 1,200 machines — including progressive slots and electronic tables — along with a bingo hall, and live table games open daily at 5:30 pm and run until 3 am. You need to be 18 in Manitoba. Since 2014 the 1,300-seat Club Regent Event Centre has hosted comedy and concerts, and inside the hotel itself Playmaker's Gaming Lounge has VLTs, 9 am until midnight.

Eating in

Aaltos is the buffet: themed dinners Thursday through Sunday, 5–8 pm (turkey, roast beef, surf and turf, or ribs and chicken), and Sunday brunch 10 am–2 pm. For a drink there's Toukies, the casino lounge; for a quick bite, a McDonald's and a shop selling ice cream.

Worth knowing

Practicalities: free parking in the casino parkade; the airport about 15 km (25 minutes) away; check-in 4 pm and check-out 11 am per AAA, which also says pets aren't accepted. Club Card members should ask about the Stay & Play rate, which comes with $15 in free play per member.

The getaway verdict

Book it for an event-centre show or a gaming night in Winnipeg. Expect a hotel, not a resort — the reason it misses our top ten by a whisker.
