The essentials
The short version
The hotel's full title is a long Canad Inns one; what matters is six floors, 146 non-smoking rooms and a door through to the casino — Club Regent, one of Winnipeg's two, operated by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries. A AAA inspector called the rooms "modest", and we wouldn't argue. You can book Two Queen, One Queen, One King or a One-Bedroom King Suite.
At the tables, and on stage
The casino has roughly 1,200 machines — including progressive slots and electronic tables — along with a bingo hall, and live table games open daily at 5:30 pm and run until 3 am. You need to be 18 in Manitoba. Comedians and bands have played the Club Regent Event Centre (1,300 seats) since 2014, and inside the hotel Playmaker's Gaming Lounge keeps its VLTs running from 9 a.m. to midnight.
Eating in
For dinner there's the Aaltos buffet, Thursday to Sunday from 5 to 8, each evening with a theme — turkey one night, roast beef, surf and turf or chicken with ribs on others — and a Sunday brunch from 10 until 2. For a drink there's Toukies, the casino lounge; for a quick bite, a McDonald's and a shop selling ice cream.
Worth knowing
Practicalities: free parking in the casino parkade; the airport about 15 km (25 minutes) away; check-in 4 pm and check-out 11 am per AAA, which also says pets aren't accepted. Club Card members should ask about the Stay & Play rate, which comes with $15 in free play per member.
The getaway verdict
Book it for an event-centre show or a gaming night in Winnipeg. Expect a hotel, not a resort — the reason it misses our top ten by a whisker.
